How Tooth Decay Happens
When decay occurs, a cavity forms, which is a small hole in the tooth. It occurs when the bacteria in our mouth feed off of the sugars in food, creating an acid that can wear right through your tooth. Sipping on sugary beverages, snacking and not being stringent about your brushing and flossing can all cause tooth decay and cavities.
The Key Is Prevention
Tooth decay is common around the entire world. It can happen to children, teens, adults and senior citizens. It’s important to note that if you have teeth, decay can set in. That means even infants can experience tooth decay.
If left untreated, the decay can penetrate deeply into the tooth. You may experience pain in your teeth, get an infection or face losing your teeth. The key to preventing tooth decay from affecting your life is to brush your teeth at least twice a day, floss daily and have regular dental checkups at Madigan Dental.
Do You Need a Filling?
There are some common signs that you might notice if you have a cavity. It’s important to know that you may also experience no symptoms. The ones that are experienced most often include
- Sensitive teeth
- Toothache
- Holes or pits in your teeth
- Stains on the surface of teeth
- Pain when chewing
What to Expect When Getting a Filling
When we have determined that you have tooth decay and require a filling, the first step is to have the decay removed from the tooth. We’ll clean the tooth and can then fill it. Different materials are available for fillings. The most commonly requested are white fillings that blend in with your teeth. If the tooth’s structure has been compromised by the decay, we may recommend that you have a crown placed over it to make the tooth stronger.
