Teeth Whitening at Madigan Dental
Have you noticed that your smile isn’t quite as bright as it used to be? Your concern is a common one that could be easily addressed with teeth whitening. At Madigan Dental, you’ll find a broad array of solutions including options for teeth whitening. We provide you with choices for your whitening; an in-office procedure with Opalescence® Boost or a take-home kit from Philips Zoom.
If you aren’t sure which is right for you, there are a couple of considerations you’ll want to think about. Some prefer to whiten their teeth at home over a longer period of time because they find it difficult to come in for an appointment. If you would like more dramatic results or need to have your teeth whitened right away, in-office whitening may be best for you.

Opalescence Boost
You can show off a brighter smile without waiting to see your results with Opalescence Boost. This whitening gel contains a combination of potassium nitrate and fluoride. It is chemically activated, so you won’t have to worry about sitting under an uncomfortably warm light. Your dentist will assist you through the entire procedure. At the end, you’ll be able to show off your new smile.
Philips Zoom
This professional take-home whitening system is the only one that offers a combination of ACP (amorphous calcium phosphate), fluoride and potassium nitrate. It was uniquely developed by Philips with the aim of reducing tooth sensitivity and improving its whitening power. You should find it comfortable while being able to achieve the results you want.
The kit that you’ll receive from us contains everything you need to complete your teeth whitening procedure at home. It includes custom-created trays made in our office. You can use them over and over again to touch up your whitening as needed.
A lot of places sell teeth whitening kits and products claiming to be professional strength. However, like medication, you can only get certain strengths of products when they’re administered by a professional. Teeth bleaching kits are the same way. Anything purchased over-the-counter or from a salon will work, but it’s not as strong as what’s available from our dentist.
The more effective and cost-savvy solution for whitening is to use a professional system. The results are brighter and quicker, so you don’t have to whiten as long or often.
Enamel discoloration can come from a variety of different sources. Some of us have naturally dark teeth that we’ve inherited. Others might have taken specific types of medication (like tetracycline, a common antibiotic) that caused the teeth to discolour early in development.
Since our tooth enamel is porous, it can easily soak up discolorations from the foods and drinks we consume. Dark liquids, berries, tomato sauces and tobacco products are just a few examples.
Environmental factors can cause staining, too. For example, people who frequently swim in chlorinated pools often see superficial stain on their teeth.
Maintaining Your Results
Topping off your whitening is easy with our custom trays. Simply wear them a few times (or up to a week) after each scale and clean. If you drink a lot of coffee or tea, you might want to top off more frequently. Any time you need more gel, just stop by our office!
In the meantime, there are things you can do to limit how quickly your teeth start staining again. For dark liquids, consider drinking through a straw. If you’re eating a food with dark sauces or berries, try to rinse your mouth out well immediately after the meal.
Practicing good oral hygiene and scheduling a regular scale and clean can help keep plaque bacteria and stain particles from settling into your smile, keeping it brighter for a longer amount of time.
Candidates for Teeth Whitening
Before you start whitening your teeth, we’ll need to make sure your smile is healthy. First, we’ll screen for any active areas of tooth decay. Those will need to be treated first, so that you don’t suffer from unnecessary tooth damage or sensitivity. If you do have areas of demineralisation, be sure to brush and floss well each day; those surfaces might brighten more quickly than the others, causing them to stand out in the beginning.
We’ll also evaluate your gums for signs of periodontitis. If you have any active gum infections, those will need to be under control before initiating cosmetic dentistry treatments. Having your teeth cleaned will lift way any tartar buildup that’s irritating your gums and make it easier for the whitening gel to come into full contact with your tooth.
Any tooth-coloured restorations like white fillings or porcelain crowns in your smile zone won’t whiten when the gel is applied. So, if you’re planning on updating your dental work, we suggest whitening your teeth first so that the new restoration can be matched to your brighter teeth. Otherwise, there will be noticeably dark restorations when you smile.
Whitening isn’t recommended for women who are currently pregnant or nursing. If you are, hold off just a little longer!
Do teens qualify for whitening? It depends. Most teens do best with over-the-counter products that use less-concentrated solutions, because their teeth are still developing and thus more prone to sensitivity.
